Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month, you’ll probably be well aware that Pokemon GO for mobile devices is taking the world by storm. I didn’t download it on release, but eventually I caved in (after my niece asking me to download it and play it with her – honest!). 5 weeks later and I’m still playing it, trying to bag myself a Charizard (the one Pokemon card that everyone wanted back in the day, and its the same in this game too – dunno why I want a Charizard I just do !).
As I’ve been playing the game, I’ve come across a few things I’d like to see added in future updates. One of these is being able to transfer multiple Pokemon at once. This would come in really handy if you have say x40 pidgeys in your list that you want to transfer, currently doing this one at a time is very painful indeed.
I won’t go into the other features just yet, however, as a daily smartwatch user I’d definitely like to see Niantic develop a smartwatch app for it. It doesn’t even have to be the full game (as current smartwatch devices may not be able to run it smoothly), even a companion app would suffice.
I know Nintendo are soon releasing the Pokemon GO Plus wrist strap accessory which will interact and work alongside the Pokemon Go app, alerting you of nearby pokestops and Pokemon without having to take your phone out of your pocket. This all seems cool, I like the idea if I’m walking past a pokestop I can just swipe the little led on the wrist strap and thats me got it, but, I have x2 problems with the device itself:
1). The wristband only allows you to catch Pokemon that you have already caught previously, meaning that lets say you walk past a weedle (which you’ve caught a million times before), but at the same time there’s a rare Snorlax that you’ve never caught right next to the weedle, the wriststrap is only going to alert you and let you catch the weedle and unknowingly to yourself (which is probably a good thing!), you’ve just walked past and ignored a CP 1000+ Snorlax.
2). Theres no display – and whilst this isn’t a deal breaker and will keep manufacturing / consumer costs to a minimum, I just think having a little display with some information on it or some sort of similar UI as the Pokemon GO app would be nice and more special.
As a daily smartwatch user this is brings me onto what has been on my mind a lot over the last 3 weeks…why don’t Niantic and whoever else begin working on smartwatch app ? It doesn’t have to be the full game (since smartwatches today may struggle to run it smoothly and they don’t all have 3g capabilities either), but perhaps a companion app for smartwatches. At first I thought there would be complications with this idea, since Nintendo are pushing the Pokemon GO plus accessory, but having a smartwatch app would only increase sales and interest.
The Pokemon GO plus accessory is great for folk without smartwaches and a standalone Pokemon GO app for smarwatch users would appeal to the smartwatch market. Not only this, but I’m sure an app like this would seriously boost the sales in the smartwatch market as well.
The app like I say, doesn’t need to be the full game above, but it could be a watered down version, that would allow you to swipe on the screen when walking past pokestops and also display an alert message on screen of nearby Pokemon.
I seriously hope Niantic gives this a thought as not only will it increase sales in smartwatches, but its only going to grow and get more people involved with Pokemon GO as well.
Would you add more features to the app? Do you think a smartwatch companion app would be cool ? Let me know in the comments below.
